Cheesy Love Story-- Or Not

Sunday, 23 November 2014

She was happy. She knew he loved her. The kind of love that is not selfish and demanding. He sang for her during Skype calls. He would hug her from behind without her expecting it. He would proudly hold her hand in public, and she loved it. She loved the way he loved her. It was all she needed. She had been hurt for so long and to have someone loved her, in the simplest form of love there could ever be, was more than enough. He did not have much, but he would give her the world if he could.

--

No one expected them to ever be together. Not even them. She had always admired him for his intelligence, and his almost-cocky attitude. Sometimes she would watch him adjust his glasses so it sat perfectly on his nose, but that was it. "There would be nothing more" she thought. They have not been friends for a long time anyway, they practically did not know each other. For him? The thought never even crossed his mind.
No way. She was not pretty, she definitely did not have the grace he always looked for in a girl, she was not gentle. From the scale of "there might be a chance" to "impossible", to him it was "definitely impossible" times a hundred. He never imagined that one day she would be the person he'd long for. He never expected her to ever become so important. He enjoyed being friends with her, but nope, not his type.

--

They became the people who would make people turn heads in the corridor because everyone agreed she should not be the one walking by his side. Even he was surprised that he enjoyed it, enjoyed her presence. Everyone questioned their decision. They were a couple that should never be. The strangest combination. "Who would've thought" people would say. Some would confront him or her asking if it was for real, in a doubtful tone. Some would tell him he was too good for her. He was not her type, either. She had a lot of experience with boys before, well at least compared to him, she was his first girlfriend. Not one person she'd been with was like him. Maybe that's what made them special, everything was unexpected and different. It was so sudden that no one was sure what was going on, they're included.

--

"May I kiss you?" he asked. She was both confused and surprised, only managed to nod a little. She was wearing the long sleeve shirt he said he liked, because "There's something when you wear it, I can't quite explain" he said. He gently pull her closer and they kissed. The kind of kiss people in love would do. At least that's what she thought.

--

His presence intimidated her. She never liked feeling inferior to other people. He was so smart, though, that's one thing she liked. They barely talked to each other. He never even cared enough to pay attention to her, she's just another girl in class. She had no friends.

One day they got friendly because she became the only girl in their group of friends. That was it. They never really gotten close. Not until a few months later.

--

She would feed him with dreams. She's a dreamer. He was more realistic. He was skeptic about a lot of things. She would talk about the future. At first, he did not like it. But after spending so much time with her, his guard had no choice but to come down. He started building dreams, mostly with her in it. He would start imagining what his future--their future would be like. He loved her, loved her so much. Nothing like he ever felt. He did her wrong once, he's determined to never disappoint her again. It consumed him, his love. He did not know his heart was capable of feeling something so strong.

--

He was a tough guy. He was hard on himself, and on people. He had this firmness in him that everyone who knew him just understood. He was the most gentle person she'd ever been with. He gave her the best hugs. It's almost like he's a different person when he's with her. Well, not really, but his love for her stood out, more than anything else. They were always together. Always. They could not be apart from each other. His arm was always around her. It surprised her, too, that he was able of loving someone that way. Each day felt like another surprise. She felt lucky it was her. She was the girl he loved? Really? It was surreal, to experience this kind of relationship with someone who used to be so far away. She was content, and she had not been in a long time. Everything before him was a blur. She loved him. She did. She never doubted it, not even once. She did not know when she fell for him, but by then she was in love.

--

It was his birthday. She wrote him a long letter, a very detailed letter of their relationship. It was probably the most genuine thing she'd ever written for someone. "Remember the first day after we're together, you got upset because I did not reply to your messages? That was cute" "Two weeks after that was the first time you told me you love me" and her favourite sentence she wrote for him "You told me I was the one who change you, while you were the one who changed yourself. :)"

--

Years later, all she could do was to miss him. More each day. Even more when she stumbled upon his picture on Facebook. There's always something about his smile. Even more when she accidentally found the book she wrote for him for his birthday, more when she re-read what she wrote for her. She missed him. Deep down inside, she has always missed him. They could never be together again, all she could do was to be thankful for everything that they had.

--

"I'm sorry. Do you forgive me?"
"I'm not sure."

--

He moved on. He was hurt for a long time, struggled to get back to his feet again, and he's in a good place he would never go back to that hell again. He went through so much for her. He went through so much because of her. He gave too much. She ripped him apart. It used to still get to him sometimes, the memories. But he's okay. Traces of her were gone, forever. He would never get close to anything that's related to her. She was toxic.

--

"I dreamt of you. Are you okay?" he said.
That happened way too much. They were attached in a way, despite everything that happened.

--

He kept appearing in her dreams.

--

He stopped dreaming of her.

--

She still dreams of him.
