My Favourite Highlighters

Monday, 9 May 2016

There's no doubt that 2015 was the year of highlighters. Professional MUAs have used highlighters since the beginning of time but more in a selective way, not in a highlight-be-poppin Instagram style. I favour the highlighting trend more than the extreme contouring, because you can never go wrong with glowing skin! However, I feel like my skin type and texture do not suit intense highlighting, also that type of look works great for photos but sometimes does not translate very well in real life. Experiment, and do what works for you! I do envy those girls who can rock this trend (Desi Perkins is the most beautiful human being am I right?), one can dream....

That being said, most of the time I like my highlight to be blended into the rest of my makeup and not really stand out on its own, I tend to prefer warmer highlights, as I have found icy highlighters don't really look good on me. Some days I like it more intense than other days, but for everyday I like it more toned down. So if that's the type of look you like, these are a couple of my favourite highlighters that I swear by....

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Soft and Gentle, KIKO Water Eyeshadow 208 swatch

1. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish "Soft and Gentle"

This is the godmother of highlighters. MAC has had this for years and years and it's still a favourite of many! MAC Soft and Gentle is actually my first highlighter and still my all time favourite. I have to say despite dozens of more recent, more exciting highlighter launches, the fact that I have this in my collection makes me think "I'm good" and I don't go crazy over new launches.

This highlight is a shimmery champagne beige shade that's very buildable. You can get super subtle or intense with this product. The shade compliments my skintone perfectly which is the main reason why I like it because it blends seamlessly into my makeup. It is more on the powdery side but it's not fragile and has more of a hard texture than creamy. The more you put on, the more you emphasize pores and textures, but for everyday natural highlight look I never have a problem with that. The pan size is huge so if you are not a makeupaholic, this highlight will last you a lifetime.

2. KIKO Water Eyeshadow 208

This product is so popular because it's an exact dupe of the highly coveted MAC Whisper of Gilt (Limited Edition). This highlight is a newer addition to my collection but boy do I love it so much. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like how it translates on my skin because it's dead gold on the pan, but I picked it up anyway because I don't have anything like it in my collection (it's more golden than The Balm Mary Lou Manizer). The finish is more reflective than Soft and Gentle. I fell in love with it the first time I tried it, it looked so beautiful and not yellow at all (which was my concern). It blends really well, but it's more "obvious" than the MAC Soft and Gentle. It does not have a lot of powder kick up. The size makes it perfect for traveling. You don't have to worry about pan size because it's very pigmented and definitely packs a punch, you don't need a lot to achieve an intense highlight. Just know that if you see me in the next couple of weeks that this is the highlight I'm going to be wearing. I have been wearing this nonstop!
