In which I share with you my favourite makeup items in 2016.....

Primer: Had to be Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer. My biggest skin concern is my huge pores, and smoothing primers are my favourite. This one also prolongs the life of my makeup, on top of making my foundation smooth over my pores like it's no big deal. It blurs my skin texture. I use it all over my face instead of just on my t-zone area. I have other smoothing primers (which I also love) but the others have the tendency to slide everywhere and ball up when I apply foundation. This one doesn't. It's also water resistant and created for oilier skin types, so it has oil controlling properties.

Foundation: It's Make Up For Ever Ultra HD. Surprise, surprise. I get that it's not the most "exciting" pick, I just think that it's a good all round foundation you can wear any day, and it suits most skin types. It's a standard for a good foundation. It reacts well to anything I put beneath and on top of it, it's quite long wearing, it does not have SPF so there's no flashback, it does not accentuate pores/lines on my face, it's not cakey and feels lightweight. If there's anything it can improve, is I wish it controls oil better. To know more of what I think about it, see here.

Concealer: Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer is pretty much the only concealer I wore all year. It's got everything I need. Pigmentation, blendability, staying power, it does not crease at all, even on rare days when it does, it's very minimal. Other concealers crease on me, this one does not. It does not accentuate dryness under the eyes. It's a very forgiving concealer. They also have decent shade selection. A good all rounder concealer you can use to brighten the undereyes or cover moderate spots on the face. Love love love it.

Powder: RCMA No Color Powder. Super finely milled, lightweight, after it sets and meld with my foundation it looks transparent on the skin. It's not terribly drying to bake my undereyes with. It does not look powdery and very skin-like. It helps blur out imperfections whereas other powders usually accentuate them as powders tend to be drying. However, as it is not a heavy duty powder you may find it does not keep your makeup perfect all day long. I'm fine with blotting here and there after a few hours though. I'm okay with not wearing compact powder, but I always wear this every time I wear makeup.

Contour: Tricky tricky. I have never been into strong contouring, not even when I go to special events. However, the product I use when I want to create subtle dimension is mostly the Illamasqua Sculpting Duo in Lumos and Heliopolis. I use this duo mainly for the contouring shade because the highlighter is dusty, dry, and it does not show up on me at all. The contour powder however, is so nice. It blends beautifully and moderately pigmented. Most importantly, the shade is on point. It has mostly neutral undertone, but it leans a little more cool. It's just a really nice shade for natural contouring. The finish on the skin is satin, it does not look flat.

Bronzer: Definitely Make Up For Ever Pro Bronze Fusion bronzer in 20M. The other shades in this line I feel were too orange or too red, but this shade is really nice. They say it's a gel-power formula that blends seamlessly into the skin, I wholeheartedly agree. I don't know how to express how much I love this product. It's one of those in my collection that is reliable and I know will never mess up my makeup. It looks very natural on the skin, no matter how many I wear it never looks overboard. The gel formula keeps it mess-free because there is no powder kick up at all. I like to use my Sigma F40 brush with it as it works well with a denser brush, if you use a duo fibre brush with it you will have to keep building over and over again because fluffier brushes will not pick up the amount of pigment you need. It has a sheer to medium pigmentation.

Highlight: Okay this is impossible. Most of the beginning of the year, I still used my MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Soft and Gentle religiously. The shade is perfect for my skin tone, it blends seamlessly so it just gives my skin a beautiful glow without necessarily making it look pink or gold. I can intensify the glow without making it look chunky. I never worried about it accentuating my skin texture. So for now it's going to be MAC Soft and Gentle.

Blush: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush! Hands down. My favourite shade right now is Luminous Flush. It's one of the best technologies in the makeup world. I'm a blusher person and there's nothing like it. It compliments the skin and it adds the most flattering glow. My good makeup days are when I wear this blush. I never experienced trouble with blending and staying power. Best blush on the market.

Eye Primer: I don't think it's fair because I never tried anything else since I used NARS Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eye Base. Shoot me a recommendation if you have oily eyelids and you have found something that works for you.

Eyeshadow Palette: Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. I haven't stopped recommending this palette to people because it is the best, and turns out people around me are still loyal to their Naked palette but I think Chocolate Bar is much better. If you are used to your Naked palette, when you see the shades in this one you'd think they're not wearable, but they are, and it's so easy to create multiple eyeshadow looks with this palette. Other favourite would be Lorac Mega Pro 3, but I've only gotten it in the last few months of 2016. The shades are on trend, you can create countless of looks, from the most natural to the most dramatic. Also it's actually not that big. Quality wise, I still like Too Faced Chocolate Bar better, but Lorac Mega Pro 3 is an excellent palette.

Cream Eyeshadow: I feel like it's necessary to have this category given how much I love cream shadows. My favourite this year would be Tom Ford Cream Color For Eyes in Spice. This eyeshadow is packed with pigment that it will take years for me if I were to try to finish it. You need the tiniest amount to cover the entire eyelid. The finish is wet-like, very expensive looking, magnificent metallic shine. Its mousse-like texture is unique, I believe only Charlotte Tilbury has something similar. It stays on the entire day without any creasing or fading. It's magic!

Eyebrow Product: This may come as a surprise, but Holika Holika Skinny Drawing Pencil in 01 Black. I like my eyebrows naturally defined, I don't like to them look dark and entirely filled in. I like to see textures, perfectly imperfect brows. This eyebrow pencil has a small nib, which makes it easier to control. It is a little waxy and a little stiff, but not to a point where you have to repeatedly draw in the same area for the pigment to come out. I find that I like this texture better than creamier eyebrow pencil, because creamy texture usually means the pigmentation is more intense. This one has a natural, sheer to medium pigmentation. The shade is great for girls and boys with black hair, it's not too grey, it just blends perfectly with my brow hairs. The spoolie on the other end of the pencil is very nice as well, it does grip and brush your eyebrows the way you want it to.

Liquid Lipstick: Oooh another tricky tricky. On the top of my head it's Kat Von D Everlasting liquid lipsticks. They're just the best. A lot of people think they are drying but I don't find that they are at all. They feel weightless on the lips, they stay on for hours and hours, no need to worry your lipstick will look bad after a big meal. Their colour selection is very Kat, which means they have a lot of bold, bright, and deep shades. Another strong contender would be Jouer. Their liquid lipsticks are also lightweight, but after a few hours you start to feel them on your lips. They have amazing colour selection, they are comfortable and opaque as well.

Lip Gloss: Dior Rouge Brillant. I love everything about them. The applicator holds the perfect amount you need to coat the entire lips. They feel cushiony and plush, smells really nice, gives the lips a plump, wet look, without weighing them down nor feeling sticky. They also don't feather despite having a thinner texture.

Finishing Spray: I mean... Do I need to tell you? It's MAC Prep + Prime Fix+! I douse my face with this every time I wear makeup. It perfects my look and blend everything together. It removes areas that may look powdery, and it gives the skin a beautiful healthy finish. If you like matte skin I don't think you'll enjoy this.

Miscellaneous: For tinted lip balm I choose Dior Lip Glow. It's no secret how much I love this product. It's versatile and can be worn with any makeup look. Effortless but pretty on the lips.

Did I miss anything? I didn't pick a lipstick because I don't have a favourite this year as I rotate my collection non stop and I don't feel like I have found something superior than the others. Lipsticks have various finishes, various texture, etc that I don't feel like it's fair to compare one to the other! I also didn't pick mascara and brow gel simply because I don't think anything I've tried were worthy of being crowned as the best of 2016. I have favourites of course but not products I'd put on in this list! Maybe next time.

Much love,
x
